The Federal Trade Commission announced today that the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Rule is being modified, with these amendments effective July 1, 2013. The review, initiated in 2010, included round table discussions, public comments and considerable attention to the changing landscape of technology, such as social networking and mobile devices. The changes to the rule will strengthen privacy for children under the age of 13 and give parents more control.
“The Commission takes seriously its mandate to protect children’s online privacy in this ever-changing technological landscape,” said FTC Chairman Jon Leibowitz. “I am confident that the amendments to the COPPA Rule strike the right balance between protecting innovation that will provide rich and engaging content for children, and ensuring that parents are informed and involved in their children’s online activities.”
