In a significant move, the Federal Trade Commission (“FTC”) has filed a lawsuit against Kochava Inc., a data broker that has allegedly sold highly sensitive geolocation data from millions of mobile devices. The data in question can reveal individuals’ visits to reproductive health clinics, places of worship, shelters for the homeless or domestic violence survivors, and addiction recovery centers. The FTC argues that Kochava’s practices have exposed consumers to serious risks, including the potential for discrimination, physical violence, and emotional distress.
